Make a cottage pie with a twist using lean minced beef , canned sliced mushrooms, hot dog sausages and Bisto Gravy then top with mashed potato and grated cheese.

Serves 4

What you need

  • 450g lean minced beef
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 1 can sliced mushrooms
  • 1 can hotdog sausages, sliced
  • 500ml Bisto Gravy Granules, made up as directed
  • 4 large potatoes, peeled boiled and mashed
  • 50g grated cheddar cheese
  • non-stick pan
  • casserole dish

How to make it

  1. Preheat the oven at 190ºC/ 375ºF/Gas 5.
  2. Add the minced beef to a non-stick frying pan and gently fry for about 5 minutes until browned.
  3. Add the onions and continue to cook for a further 5 minutes.
  4. Stir in the canned mushrooms, hot dog sausages and Bisto Gravy and simmer gently for five minutes.
  5. Transfer the minced beef mixture to a lightly greased casserole dish and then top with mashed potato and grated cheese.
  6. Bake in a preheated oven for 30-35 minutes until the potato is golden.

Hints and tips

  • For additional taste and texture add a can of baked beans to the minced beef.

  • I loved this recipe! Replaced the Beef mince and Hot Dogs with the Vegetarian alternative versions and it turned out fantastic. As an oldie confirmed bachelor, I often long for real Mum food. This one not only fits the bill, but tops it, as well.
